Lee H. Moultrie’s work is shaped by military service, community leadership, cancer survivorship, healthcare advocacy, and a commitment to helping people understand the decisions that can affect their health, protection, and legacy.
Dolly Parton & Imagination Library
A Literacy Mission That Became Personal
Long before the photograph, Lee was doing the work. Beginning in 2010, he helped families connect young children with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and its mission of putting books directly into children’s homes.
Children’s Literacy
Helping Books Reach Children at Home
Lee has volunteered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library since 2010, helping parents and caregivers learn about a program that mails free books to children from birth through age five, regardless of family income. In 2016, while supporting the program, Lee and his wife had the opportunity to meet Dolly before her North Charleston Coliseum concert.
For Lee, the connection was never simply about meeting a celebrated entertainer. It was about literacy, access, and helping families give young children more opportunities to hear words, explore stories, and develop a relationship with reading at home.
Program availability and enrollment are determined by local Imagination Library partners.
The Cancer Journey
One Message Led to Early Detection and Informed Treatment
In his late 30s, a yellow prostate-cancer information bag in a barber shop prompted Lee to ask questions and begin monitoring his PSA at age 39. Years later, that decision contributed to early detection.
After monitoring his condition, Lee reached the point when treatment became necessary. He selected proton therapy and completed an approximately eight-week treatment course during the winter of 2021.

Treatment strengthened his commitment to helping others seek care and ask informed questions.

Advocacy After Cancer
Survivorship Strengthened a Mission Built on Trust
Cancer gave Lee’s existing healthcare advocacy a new personal dimension. Through support groups, educational outreach, and public testimony, he encourages people to ask questions, keep regular appointments, and take an active role in their care.
His work with In Our DNA SC carries the same principle into research: meaningful participation begins with trust, representation, and direct engagement through credible local relationships.
